Managing People Using The Value Immersion Process
About the Author
Tom Collins received his Bachelor of Science degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Engineering Systems/Computer Science and his MBA degree (with honors) in Organization Design/Management of Change Processes/Computers and Information Systems from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

During his career he served as the highest ranking administrative officer (equivalent to COO) in the Physics Department and the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA, and at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Early on he realized that his success as a manager was primarily dependent on the extent to which he was able to motivate his subordinates to do their best.  For this reason he devoted considerable time to participating in seminars, taking classes, and testing various strategies for motivating people.  He found both the classical (see Motivational Techniques page) and the new fad approaches to be lacking and ineffective for various reasons.

As a result of this frustration he set out to identify the characteristics that distinguished successful organizations.  He found that the key factor that differentiate these organizations from those which were average, below average, or unsuccessful was that the organizational environment was characterized by a set of positive values that guided peoples perception of their jobs, organization, management, peers, and themselves.

He cataloged these values and integrated them into his own organization at Scripps.  The outcome was highly successful as measured by his recognition as having one of the most successful organizations in the University of California, repeated invitations to present his approach at professional meetings, and the reactions of his people who urged him to document his program in a book.

The Book "Value Immersion For Maximum Employee Performance:  A Framework For Getting The Best From Your People" documents this approach.
